BACK TO THE BLOG

Last month, I took my first-ever manual driving lesson.

I was in Bali, and had to find the rare carpark to learn how to not stall a car 😛

As I pulled up to the carpark, I saw 3 men who were gatekeeping the entrance and taking 50c payments to use the carpark.

But the problem was this: I didn’t have cash.

So I said to them “Hey sorry we don’t have any cash but you know what, I’m not even here to park the car. Don’t worry, I’m just here to learn how to drive the car in the car park”

And straight away, the man’s shaking his head vigorously, saying “No. You cannot. No learning how to drive a car here, it’s too dangerous”.

My stomach sank. If I couldn’t use this carpark, where else could I learn manual?

But fear not. There’s always a way, if there’s a will 🙂

I stuck my head out the window, and say “Hey, what if I gave you a $10 tip?” He hesitated. I saw my opportunity and beckoned him closer “Hey hey, wanna take your wife out for a romantic dinner tonight?”

And at that point, he burst out into laughter.

He turned to his colleagues and repeated what I had just said to them, and they clapped their hands together, laughing out loud.

Then he turned to me and said, “Ok fine, Go ahead”

The lesson here?

  1. Make someone laugh and you’ll win them over.
