How to build rapport fast at networking

BACK TO THE BLOG

Recently, I met this bunch of legends at an event and in passing, someone brought up lettuce 🥬

I saw my opportunity…

Me: “Why did the lettuce cross the road?”

They groaned and rolled their eyes, yet looked at me with smiles of anticipation

Me: “Just cos….” 😉

You may think that’s a dead-end for a conversation, but then we proceeded to talk about all the different types of lettuce, how random lettuce is, then laughed about how silly this conversation was, and still way more fun than the monotonous business ones everyone else was probably having.

And it’s true: Fun conversations are the best way to build new relationships.

One time I wore a banana suit to a Halloween party, danced and ate food all night, then got a business deal the next month from someone I met at that party.

Relationships are based on feeling good around each other.

And yes, it’s actually quite important to eventually go deep and vulnerable, but before that, trust needs to be built first.

And trust comes from feeling comfortable with each other.

The opposite? Overstepping this invisible line and oversharing too early, which loses the other person immediately, if that rapport has not been earned yet.

So, have a laugh. Keep it fun. Tell jokes. Talk about silly things!

What was a moment of conversation with a stranger that has stuck with You, for good or bad reason?

Ps. If you want to become a natural at networking, where you skip awkward conversations and build great relationships, email trang@trangnova.com NETWORK and I’ll send you for free the video from my course that will show you exactly how!
