It’s 2021 and I’ve just gotten the opportunity to run a big workshop.
As the first-ever external speaker taking-over from the founder (Let’s call her Sasha), I know I have big shoes to fill.
To make it more challenging, I don’t get to teach my own content. Instead, I have to learn the existing curriculum then present to a room of 80 people.
Despite my nerves, I take the stage.
Minutes into the event, I see all the signs that I need: The audiences’ eyes following me as I move across the stage.
They are laughing at my jokes.
They are raising their hand to contribute.
They are engaging with my questions.
The audience is PRESENT.
After finishing the successful event, I walk out of the building and bump into one of the audience members.
As I approach her, she exclaims “Oh Trang that was brilliant! Honestly, I was engaged the whole time, like, the WHOLE time. And that’s pretty hard for me. I zoned out quite quick the last time when it was run by Sasha actually…”
And this blew my mind!! Never did I think I could receive this direct feedback.
Between my workshop and Sasha’s, the content is exactly the same: The same teaching points. The same slides.
The difference? Delivery.
How I structure the transitions.
How I modulate my voice.
How I use my body language.
How I engaging the audience. What remarks I add in response to the audience.
