It’s 2001. I’m just 6 years old and still struggling at school because of my limited English.
One lunchtime, I’m in the playground skipping rope with my friend. We’re laughing and giggling, trying out new tricks for the first time.
Suddenly out of nowhere, I hear a jarring scream of pain “OW”.
I turn around and see a boy from my class standing there rubbing his shoulder, looking at me with eyes that screamed ‘betrayal’.
I’d accidentally hit him with my rope.
He runs off, and within minutes, a teacher is walking towards me, with him by her side, pointing at me.
The teacher, Mrs Monte, approaches me and asks: “Trang, did you do that by accident, or on purpose?”
Now those are two very big words for a little girl who doesn’t understand much English.
I don’t understand what she is saying, so I just look down at the ground and shrug my shoulders.
And for that, I get 10 minutes of timeout, where I have to stand in the corner on my own.
In that moment, I had stayed quiet. I didn’t speak up for myself.
Instead, I had let someone else speak for me.
My friends, we are living in the best era of human history.
We have more power than ever before. More freedom. More opportunity.
But that power is conditional.
We need to use our voice to unlock our power.
Only when we advocate for ourselves, speak our truth, assert our rights and show the world what we are made of, is when that power can be accessed.
Without our voice. There is no power.
So go out there and speak up so you can be seen and heard for who you are!!! 🌏
