Public speaking advice if I weren’t afraid to hurt your feelings

BACK TO THE BLOG

I often get asked for general public speaking advice, and where I could give you the same old advice that you’ve already heard 3295 times before, let me go straight into the juicy stuff.

So, here are 5 pieces of advice about public speaking if I weren’t afraid to hurt your feelings.

  1. Speaking is EVERYTHING

You could be the smartest and most passionate business owner, but if you can’t confidently or clearly convey that to others, you will only ever be perceived at the level of your ability to speak.

  1. Connect to your message FIRST before anything else

It doesn’t matter how much you practice your presentation in front of the mirror if you aren’t connected to your message. If your heart isn’t in it, you could still go blank and have no where to go.

  1. Either speak from the heart, or practice your talk an unreasonably large number of times

Anything in the middle is what I call the memorisation ‘danger zone’, where you’re able to recite it when alone, but as soon as you get nervous in front of a group, you’re still at risk of freezing and struggling to continue.

  1. Don’t practice in front of a mirror

You don’t want to train yourself to perform FOR yourself, when you should be performing AS yourself. Practice to your phone camera (Back camera ofc) and watch back on the recording LATER to critique yourself.

  1. You’re not a bad public speaker

You just haven’t done it enough times yet. Like anything, speaking is a skill that anyone can learn and master. So, what are you waiting for?

Which one of these did you need to hear the most? Let me know by sending an email to trang@trangnova.com, I’d love to hear 🙂
