In a recent semi-private coaching session, a client asked me, “How can I make my story relatable when most people have never been through what I have?”
Here’s the thing, this client had a stroke that permanently put him in a wheelchair… At age 15.
His story is less 1 in 100,000.
So, here’s what I told him about the secret to being relatable:
Human relatability does not come from an event itself.
I mean, two different people could go through the same event, and each have a completely different response. Two people could get fired from their jobs, and one could be happy, the other devastated.
It’s the FEELINGS related to an event that people will understand.
It’s the THOUGHTS you have that people will recognise.
It’s the HUMAN RESPONSE to the event that people will relate with.
So, instead of focusing on the event, focus on what you thought and felt from that event.
Did you feel confused, overwhelmed, scared?
Did you think to yourself “I can’t do this”, or “Why me?”
This, my friends, is the secret to speaking in a relatable way to build rapport.
